The Climate in Yunnan

Basically, the climate in Yunnan Province belongs to the subtropical plateau monsoon group, with significant three-dimensional climate characteristics. The characteristics are many, with little annual temperature differences, large daily temperature differences, distinctive dry and wet seasons, and extreme vertical temperature changes with terrain height. Here is a detailed introduction:

Temperature: The average temperature in Yunnan Province is between 19-22℃ in the hottest month (July) and above 6-8℃ in the coldest month (January), with an annual temperature difference of only 10-12℃. On the same day, it is cooler in the morning and evening, and hotter at noon, especially in winter and spring, with a daily temperature difference of 12-20℃. Yunnan has a long frost-free period, with the southern border being frost-free throughout the year. Such period in the southern region is 300-330 days annually, while in the central region is about 250 days. In the colder regions of northwest and northeast Yunnan, it is about 210-220 days.

Precipitation: The precipitation distribution throughout the province is extremely uneven in terms of seasons and regions. The dry and wet seasons are distinct, with the wet season (rainy season) from May to October, with 85% of the total rainfall concentrated; The dry season (drought season) is from November to the next April, with precipitation accounting for only 15% of the total. The regional distribution of precipitation in the province varies greatly, with the highest annual regional precipitation reaching 2,200-2,700mm and the lowest at only 584mm. Most regions have an annual precipitation of over 1,000mm.

Climate Type: Yunnan has a three-zone climate of cold, warm, and hot (including subtropical). Northwest Yunnan belongs to the cold zone, with long winter without summer and shorter spring and autumn; The climate in eastern and central Yunnan belongs to the warm zone, with four seasons like spring and rainy weather leading to winter; Southern and southwestern Yunnan belong to the low-heat valley zone, with some locations located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer and entering the tropical zone. It is the zone that with long summer and no winter, and once it rains, the climate becomes autumn. Therefore, there is a saying in Yunnan that "A mountain is divided into four seasons with great differences", which makes the scenery unique.

Overall, the climate in Yunnan Province is complex and diverse, with a warm climate resembling spring all year round, a cold climate with long winter and no summer, and a tropical climate with long summer and no winter. This unique climate condition provides an important foundation for the ecosystem diversity and biodiversity of Yunnan Province.
