The county of Luoping in eastern Yunnan is noted for its springtime scenery, when its fields of canola (also known as rapeseed) plants are in full bloom, surrounding the area's mountains with a blanket of golden flowers, and also other major attractions like the Duoyi River Scenic Area, Lubuge Gorge Area, the Nine-dragon Waterfall scenic area and the customs of the Buyi ethnic people. In this article, we will mainly talk about the Lubuge Gorge Scenic Area.
Located 40 km south of the county seat. "Lubuge" is from the Buyi language, meaning "a beautiful village". The major scenic spot is the Power Dam and its artificial lake. The project was designed by engineers from Britain, Italy, Germany, and China. Human power made the valley into a fascinating view with the 18-floor dam which is like a labyrinth.
The Huangni River is a name rarely heard when the Lubuge Gorge Scenic Site is mentioned, but it was here that the present power station was established 23 years ago.
The hydropower station as a national key project was built in the 1980s. It was the first pilot station with foreign funds and the first hydropower project introducing an international bidding system in the history of hydropower development. With the operation of the plant and transmission of electricity, the successful experience of this project has impacted the traditional construction managing structure during the next ten years. Remote control has been realized in the plant. Thus, Lubuge becomes a household name and the hydropower project is a must if one comes to the gorges. The Lube Dam connects Yunnan with Guizhou like a ribbon. It gives rise to a scenic reservoir and brings benefits to the people. Its beautiful scenery is a gift from nature and the builders of the power plant.
Riding on boat tourists will see a tall banyan tree which is said to be a time signal. There are 24 divisions of the solar year in the traditional Chinese calendar on which farming season is dependent. Likewise, the Buyi people decide the time of sowing and harvest according to the subtle change of branches and leaves of trees. On the arch, island live 100 households of the Buyi who moved here from the place where the plant was built. They have well-arranged houses and live a comfortable life.
The three gorges of Lubuge include the Lion Gorge, the Diling (Monkey)Gorge, and the Twin-Elephant Gorge each with its distinctive features, yet they have something in common, that is, tranquility and serenity. Tourists will be free from worldly worries and care here.
