The Wild Elephant Valley

The Wild Elephant Valley is a national AAAA-level scenic spot located in Mengyang Nature Reserve, which belongs to Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. It is about 35 km from Jinghong, the major city of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, and it is China's first national park with the theme of animal and environmental protection. Also known as the "bridge of communication between human and Asian wild elephants".

It's worth noting that the Wild Elephant Valley is the only place in China where Asian elephants can be closely observed safely in a nonintervention way. You can walk in the tropical rainforest and track the elephants, discover the natural habitat of Asian elephants, and have close interactions with the elephants under the guidance of the staff in Elephant School.

There are many incredible projects in Wild Elephant Valley, for example, the rainforest plank road, rainforest sightseeing cable car, museum of Asian elephants, etc. Visitors can watch the wild animals and birds go about their daily lives with as little interference as possible from us humans.

All of which makes Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant & Nature Reserve something of an open-air museum, but an open-air museum with a difference: these creatures cavort about in their natural habitat, not in a man-made, city zoo habitat.

There are two gates at the Wild Elephant Valley: the south gate with more things to do and see and the north gate close to Asian Elephant Museum. At the south gate, there’s an Elephant School, the Rainforest Theatre with local folk dances, the Lizards Garden with some nationally protected animals, Butterfly Garden and Lotus Garden, etc.

Here are some tips for your trip: to fully use your time there, it is recommended that you can enter the south gate in the early morning, take the cable car to the elephant observation center, then walk down the rainforest plank road, and either finish your tour at the north gate or return to the south gate if there’s anything further that attracts you there.
