The Stone Forest

The Stone Forest National Park is a scenic area located in Lunan Yi Autonomous County, which belongs to Kunming. Lunan Yi Autonomous County is the former name of Shilin and usually be called for short as Lunan County. In 1998, Lunan County applied to change the name to Shilin(means “stone forest” in Chinese), which is the most famous scenic area in the county as well.

The stone forest is known for its beautiful scenery which was formed by karstification. UNESCO describes the South China Karst as "unrivaled in terms of the diversity of its karst features and landscapes." It spans the provinces of Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan. It is noted for its karst features and landscapes as well as rich biodiversity. Among them, the Shilin (Stone Forest), a set of remarkable karst formations and part of the South China Karst, is inscribed in 2007 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The national park is boasting an array of captivating limestone formations. Gray stones are everywhere here. Some of them look like trees, and some of them look like animals, even mushrooms. The stones rise from the ground and stand straight into the sky, some of which measure up to 40m in height. It's a fantastic experience, especially walking under the eerie shadows formed by the stones. Unsurprisingly, the Stone Forest National Park is very popular among tourists who are keen to marvel at its unique rock formations. There is an old saying: "If you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time."

Both Major Stone Forest and Small Stone Forest have the feature of confounding clusters of rocks. The Major Stone Forest is the most elegant and impressive one. The shapes like birds, elephants, and humans are apparent in their crags and pillars. Ashima's rock is situated in the Small Stone Forest as well and it’s considered as a sacred symbol of hope and freedom among the Yi people. Besides, some primitive arts are still well preserved on the stones.

Here are some tips for traveling to the Stone Forest: The park is not free to enter, so you need to buy tickets at the gate. The scenic area opens from 8 am to 6 pm. Please set aside enough time (at least two hours on-site) for your trip.

There are three ways to get to the park: The Special Bus Line from Kunming Airport, the regular bus from Kunming East Coach Station, and take a bullet train to Shilin West Station from Kunming South Railway Station first then take a bus to the scenic area. Choose the one that is the most suitable for you and enjoy your trip.
