Yunnan, as an inland province which is in the most southeast region of China, boarding the countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Burma. Within the long borders, Yunnan has a diverse range of topography like Karst topography, snow mountains, canyons, etc. Among the diverse range of topography, the Himalayan foothills of Yunnan's far northwest always get most of the attention. Besides that, if you focus on the north of the capital city Kunming, you will find one of the most spectacular snow mountains in Yunnan -The Jiaozi Snow mountain.

     The Jiaozi snow mountain belongs to Kunming, located on the border of Luquan County and Dongchuan district. It is about 150 kilometers away from Luquan County and 160 kilometers away from Kunming. A road trip into the scenic area can be a leisurely drive experience. This is a wonderful idea to enjoy the scenic view along the way which is chosen by most people as well. Take a weekend break, a full day trip, to enjoy the time on the road. Imagine that you are driving through the woods, breathing the fresh air and listening to the birds, what could be better?

    The Jiaozi Snow Mountain, which means “sedan chair snow mountain” in Chinese, which got this name from the unique shape of the main peaks that look like a sedan chair when seen from afar. The scenic area covers an area of 253 square kilometers, and this mountain is also billed as China's "lowest latitude seasonal snowy summit". Its main peak is at an elevation of 4223.4 meters, which is the highest peak in Yunnan. The elevation of the mountain is from 2300 meters to 4344 meters, which brings an incredible array of animals and plant species to this place.

    There are different beauties all year round here. In winter, small alpine lakes, virgin forests, frozen waterfalls may easily be found along the routes with an altitude of above 2, 500 meters. If you came here in spring, you would have seen that the valley was carpeted with azalea blossoms instead of the serene streams and snow-covered trees.

    There is no particularly bad time to visit the Jiaozi Snow Mountain, but for wintertime, December is a good choice. The scenic area will begin to snow and the waterfalls will start to freeze from that time. Besides winter, flowers will start to bloom in mid-February and wither away in late May. You can visit during this time if you prefer the flowers.

    After buying your ticket at the gate, you will have two options: to start walking up or take a cable car ride. If you prefer walking up, please make sure that you are wearing the proper hiking shoes and enough clothes, because the whole trip will take hours and the temperatures can fluctuate by as much as 10 degrees with the elevation increases. 

    There are some tips for those who is planning to visit the Jiaozi Snow Mountain: Remember to climb mountains along the designated route or follow the guide, do not enter undeveloped areas in the scenic area, and remember to return in time for your safety.
