Experiencing Jingpo’s Munaozongge Festival at Yunnan Nationalities Village

Yunnan Nationalities Village is going to celebrate the Jingpo ethnic minority’s Munaozongge Festival from August 18 to 20.

Munaozongge Festival is the grandest festival of Jingpo ethnic group through out the year. “Munao” is a Jingpo word while “Zongge” literally means dancing and singing. Therefore, Munaozongge refers to a dancing and singing carnival.

With strong characteristics, Jingpo is one of the native ethnic minorities mainly living in Dehong Prefecture in the west of Yunnan.  Jingpo women usually wear dozens of silver ornaments on top of their clothes that dazzle and rustle when they move.

The annual Munaozongge Festival of the Jingpo’s is quite spectacular and joined by tens of thousands of people. At the festival, people play Tuniang (a kind of Jingpo ethnic wind instrument). Following dance leaders, coupled with loud drumbeats and grand music, people start to dance around four Munao pillars. Participants dance in the S-shaped routes implying the migrating routes of the ancestors of the Jingpo people.
