Chengzi, a complex of earthen houses

25 kilometers away from Luxi County, the village is highlighted for the earthen houses which have been regarded as “a living fossil” on the history of Chinese folk residences.

Situated on a 200 meter-long mountain slope, the village is composed of nearly 1,000 earthen houses. Looked from a distance, the entire village resembles a phoenix drinking water from the pond in front of the village. Several historic and cultural sites have been found in the village, such as the Mansion of Chieftain Ang, the Former Residence of General Li, and Jiemei Walls (Sister walls) etc.

The villagers are said to be the decedents of Baishao tribe of the Yi minority. Their ancestors moved to settle down here and constructed 24 earthen houses for 24 families at the beginning. Over centuries, this small village has grown into a big one.

Strolling leisurely in the village, one will better feel the antiquity of the walls, the vicissitudes of the slabstones, the harmony and simplicity of the residents. Yet, the old and mysterious culture and history of the village is to be entirely unveiled.

In the season of autumn, the village won’t disappoint you as you can see the villager drying the harvested corns that appear golden.
